Further riffing on what I stole--shamelessly--from Badger

So it got me thinking...because earlier this year, around New Year's, our pal C. in San Francisco emailed me a list of VERY cool music, which sent me on a listening binge that lasted until Epiphany. So, here is a list (in order of how they pop into my head) of music artists whom I like that I am sure nobody else likes and/or has ever heard of. Yes, I mangled that sentence, I know. Bugger off.

  • Agent Orange
  • Adrian Belew
  • Wall of Voodoo
  • Violent Femmes
  • Josie Cotton
  • The Selecter
  • Madness
  • Haircut 100
  • Talk Talk
  • XTC
  • They Might Be Giants
  • MIA
  • Rockpile
  • Nick Lowe & His Cowboy Outfit
  • The Rockats
  • The Reverend Horton Heat
  • New Order
  • Erasure
  • Camouflage
  • When In Rome
  • Martin Briley
  • Ebn Ozn
  • Donald Fagen
  • Bow Wow Wow
  • Bananarama
  • Kaja Goo Goo
  • The Smiths
  • Bronski Beat
  • Flock of Seagulls
  • 7 Seconds
  • X
  • EMF
  • Divinyls
  • English Beat
  • The Cure
  • The Church
  • The Call
  • The Alarm
  • Dead or Alive
  • Smithereens
  • Gin Blossoms
  • Yaz
  • Devo
  • The Babies
  • ABC

More later.

Now by "nobody", you mean nobody but me, Poppy and Duane, right? Because dude, I have heard of and like many of those bands.

I agree that the original list was woefully incomplete, particularly in the punk category.

Badge, I can see Duane and--now that you mention it, you--grooving mightily to, say, The Selecter, The Specials or any of that BritSka two-tone music. Or Agent Orange, MIA, Method of Destruction. But somehow I can't see Poppy bopping around to The Rockats, X, Josie Cotton, or Blodless Pharaohs. (Although this wouldn't be the first time I was wrong about something...more like the 6th)

You're right, Joke. I have never heard of any of the bands you can't see me bopping to. But I'll take the two-tone guys, Adrian Belew, Donald Fagen, and I already claimed XTC in my version of this thing. I would also put in a bid for Tom Waits, Echo & the Bunnymen, Squeeze, and Oingo Boingo. (Weren't we just having this silly conversation of who used to play the keytar and I mentioned Oingo Boingo? Or did I dream that?)

So yeah, that list was really lame. Because none of my semi-intelligent bands were on it. Just the dumb ones. Plus there was like, zero Purcell, Rossini, or Mozart.

Poppiest,

How right thou art. We were, indeed, waxing nostalgic on the keytar and Oingo Boingo suggested itself to you.

I must confess to being pleasantly surprised to see you among the partisans of Echo and the Bunnymen. Squeeze, Tom Waits, et cetera, that I could see, though.

Is the Adrian Belew song you are thinking of "Oh Daddy?"

Jujube is correct. The song is "Oh, Daddy" from the CD Mr. Music Head.
